We are a student-led organization focused on making MSU more sustainable through implementing sustainability projects that help to educate and inspire fellow Spartans. This is achieved through project implementation focusing on issues of education, renewable and efficient energy, water conservation, transportation, green urbanization, recycling and up-cycling, food waste, and zero waste.
In 2019, Sustainable Spartans was awarded with a $25,000 grant from the Ford Motor Company to fund a sustainability project aimed towards lighting bus stops across campus using solar energy. Former S.S. president Alexa Marsh along with several other S.S. members applied for the global grant contest that funded a total of 10 student-led sustainability projects. The organization was able to install 12 solar powered lights that helped to increase safety for students waiting at bus stops as well as help CATA bus drivers to see students waiting at stops. Sustainable Spartans is part of the Student Sustainability Leadership Council. The SSLC is comprised of student representatives from various sustainability groups throughout MSU's campus. This council is used to promote and advance sustainability at MSU by having students share sustainability concerns and solutions.
